A Prayer For Grass

Have you noticed how often God allows nature to remind us of his Word ?

I was walking to the Post Office today to pick up a black cashmere sweater I ordered through Amazon. I have officially stopped shopping in the city, as my last visit to a shopping mall to buy Lululemon yoga pants left me frazzled and exhausted. It gets cold in Newfoundland, and despite PETA’s assertions that we should not use animal products, cashmere is remarkably warm, and so I wear it.

I had been watching baby cod fish swimming in the shallow side of the pond. They were playing and chasing each other. PETA says we should not eat fish, because fish have feelings. However, fishing boats pass our house every day.

As I was mulling over these things, and people’s opinions on everything, I noticed the beautiful tall grass swaying gently, and I was reminded of the words of I Peter 1 :23-25, ‘All flesh is like grass….but the word of the Lord abides forever.’

It helped me to put everything in perspective, to stay focused on God’s Word rather than what human organizations are telling me.

Some Sandpipers were playing in the pond, and I saw that the baby ducks in the pond were almost as big as their mothers.

And I smiled as I thought of the words of St. Catherine of Siena, who wrote : ‘All the way to heaven is heaven.’

  1. Sally, this is Very lovely! Reflection on your surroundings as well as what is life or more importantly what will it add up to! If we listen to other people who say they know best it won’t add up to much of anything lasting, because no human is in a position to offer absolutes! Unfortunately we live in the material imperfect plane of consciousness as we move forward in time toward our own ultimate mortality and demise! Meanwhile surviving is an essential component to our journey which does involve consuming the many foods, plant and animal that God created in this realm not that they will last in perfect harmony forever but that they will serve a substantial purpose in this process! PETA and other organization try to be the God or wisdom of the world for all of us while they don’t think about the singular fact that they created nothing and only God has the right to tell us what is appropriate to eat and how to live! I don’t need PETA or any organization telling me how to live or even what are good behaviors for us if they aren’t living according to God’s living WORD! PETA isn’t doing that at all, they are doing some good for sure in certain situations but to think they are in any position to remedy or provide answers for my life in the short or long term is sheer nonsense! We as humans must live and sustain from the abundance of what God provided, of course we should do it in respect and with appreciation for the bounty of life He provided for us and give thanks daily with each meal. When any of us meet our Master and are allowed into the realm of the absolute; the things of this world that seem unfair and so incomplete will be no more, and all is a glorious joyful peace for all that is in the kingdom of God!
Enjoy every moment in the sunlight whenever you have that opportunity as you pointed to here and when nightfall comes rest peacefully remembering the sights and sounds of God’s earthly creation you witnessed; then sleep and dream of the HEAVEN to come.

    1. Lawrence, what a beautiful and profound comment, thank-you. I think about the founder of PETA sometimes, and pray for her. Although she has such a deep compassion for God’s creatures, she herself publicly identifies as an atheist.

      1. Sally my Sister in Christ, Thank You but you inspired me to write that with this beautifully vivid slice of your so real and actual life!
A priest told me that the eulogy I wrote for a deceased family members Mass was inspired word and I tell you this because anything I can express well when thinking from the heart is only because God gives me a gift to do so and the Holy Spirit of God is with me when I ask Him to help me express what is best; that eulogy which everyone wanted a copy of later I wrote in under 5 minutes as it just flowed out of me.
There’s a cove just a short walk from where my home is located and whatever the season I take long strolls along its shores observing many of the same things you mentioned in this piece. I walk with my dog and she is getting up in years but still loves this long walk and all the natural sights and sounds, especially in the winter when so quiet and serene! We see ducks, geese and pairs of swans and always take time along the way to sit; taking it all in as you do there too near your home! It does give one pause to reflect on our purpose for being here to see all of this awe inspiring magnificence and to realize how great it all is, because only a loving and infinitely beautiful creator that is full of love could bring this to fruition; not a doubt in my mind!
I’ve not researched the PETA organization but over the years I’ve been able to ascertain what the heart of the matter is with that organization and others some I used to support. I see in some of these organizations a total lack of either belief in God or very little respect for Him and His faithful, which to me signifies a mission that is not serving God’s will nor his faithful; I think for many it becomes a power unto themselves expression; an intent for gain and sense of purpose or mission in their acquiring political earthly power and resource but that can become very corrupted like the Sierra Club did many years ago leaving its original intent of protecting open space and hiking trails. Now it’s taken a crooked trail into a politically biased movement far left of center working to propel public manipulation for more money and power while supporting many completely leftist agendas; again devoid of God! They leave God out of the equation so to me they are heading toward disaster, for God gives us all of what we have to work with and “His will” not our own must take precedence always if we are truly going to serve Him and His creation! Too many men seek to serve themselves or false ideologies! That is pagan idolatry without a doubt; worshiping or putting false God’s before Him!
“In Matthew 6:24, He warns against the worship of material things. “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money”. The Greek word mammonas, translated here as “money,” does not mean the money in one’s pockets. It is the personification of wealth or money (especially wealth gained through greediness), the love of which, in modern terminology, is “materialism.” The dangers of worshipping material things are clearly outlined in the story of the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-26) who turned away from Christ because he could not part with his wealth.
Samson (Judges 14–16), even though he was set apart for God as a Nazirite, worshipped another god that was much closer than the rich man was to his wealth. Samson’s god was himself, and his pride and self-worship led to his downfall. He was so confident in his own abilities that he believed he no longer needed God, and in the end—despite being beaten, blinded, and humiliated—Samson neither repented nor learned that his way was not God’s way. He was more concerned with revenge and his eyesight than with God’s plan for His chosen people. He served himself and his priorities, making them his idols.”
        (Got Questions Ministries)
I hope this point of view that you inspired me to expand on and how for example Samson as stated, “He served himself and his priorities, making them his idols,” clearly points out my intent and specific meaning about the lack of many organization with their mission and focus not including God first is a pathway to doom and that bringing this to your wonderful post infuses more of God’s purpose into your slice of life illustration here for all to contemplate, and then actually does some good for our brothers and sisters and of course you and yours Sally! Thank you again so much for touching my heart and soul with this beautiful essay!

  2. Fish have feeling! Lol. Sorry but never heard of that. What about the plants and animals? Sally, continue to do what is best for you. God is the author of wisdom and He knows best. Have a great weekend.

    1. I feel the same way, Beverley. God put things on earth for us to eat, and though I do not believe in abusing creatures or in overusing them to the point of extinction, I see no reason not to eat fish and meat the same as we do fruits and veggies. These activists organizations do get carried away with things. I have often wondered about people who say we should not kill cows to eat their meat, how many of them wear leather shoes or leather jackets or belts without thinking that a cow had to be killed for that, too. God is the author of wisdom and He has put His wisdom in His word for us to live by. It’s the only way to go. God bless.

      1. Thanks for your comments. Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA, identifies publicly as being an atheist. She has done much to protect precious animals, but denies the existence of their creator.

      2. I agree. These organisations have become quite rediculous in their mission. I too do not believe in abusing animals, but we have to eat. God made the first leather coat for Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed weekend.

      3. Sister in Christ Jesus Diane, I must add that I agree completely with your comment and it is very well spoken. I often wonder why so many people have difficulty in seeing simple and plain truth before their eyes! I suppose that is very easy to do when a person isn’t accepting the reality of God in their heart to begin with, as Holy Scriptures have told us, “Matthew 13:15-17: For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” So thank you Diane for your words and insight. And I say Amen!

  3. Very good Sisters in Christ Jesus; of course if we are children of God’s created in His image we all should have sensitivity to other living creatures that God created but His identification of we humans as “His Children” is a specific statement of PURPOSE in and of itself! Therefore, because we live in a temporary and broken or fallen nature world, practicality becomes necessity, and in order to fulfill God’s plan and be a part of that we must always put ourselves above the other living things in order to sustain and continue God’s plan for we his children until such time that He returns to change the entire paradigm! To do otherwise like many of these organizations are promoting is to rebel against God and reject Him as well as “His wisdom and purpose” not accepting it’s being far exceeding than anything any of we His children can fathom or rise above! EVERYTHING IN IT’S PROPER PLACE! We can’t put the cart before the horse and expect to go anywhere now can we! Brother in Christ, Lawrence

      1. 4. Beverly, humor is a good thing that God has plainly said in Scriptures, that merriment is good for the heart! I actually need a kick to get me to remember this truth as I tend to get too wrapped up in the mechanics of life’s struggles and become bogged down with too much stress. Take time to smell the roses dear Dad always said! The underlying wisdom to your comment is clear and important too that priorities must remain front and center with our Lord’s will; but along with a joyous heart as we go on serving Him in our Daily Lives. Keep smiling that great big beautiful smile; you brighten up the world! Thank You and God Bless You and Yours.

  5. Sally, I have been resisting hard in commenting on your lovely posts. They are wonderful, but some of the comments — But I am going to comment and then shut it down. I think an indication of Godliness is respect of others whether we agree with their opinions or not, not laughing because one does not agree, discounting something because we have never heard it because we learn new things every day. I will probably read your posts but I won’t go the comments for a while. God bless.
